Quick-Step Livyn is a collection of luxury vinyl floors combining the natural look and feel of wood or stone with all the practical benefits of vinyl tiles. Commenting on the installation and innovative use of the Polyflor vinyl tiles, says Tandy Coleman-Spolander: Floors for a workspace environment have a specific set of demands. Luxury Vinyl (LVT) is made of a thick wear layer then a Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) layer onto which the design is printed directly. The big difference between the three types is that Composite and Vinyl are waterproof whereas Laminate is is only water resistant; flooding may well cause swelling and warping so laminate cannot be installed in bathrooms and other wet areas.
Vinyl and Composite tend to be supplied with more modern glueless locking systems like our licensed and patented 1Lock system which make it very easy to install and prevents slippage in both directions. For floors that have planks glued to each other, adhesive may have seeped on to the floor and would hold the boards tight. Your laminate flooring can be the floating type, in which the floor is assembled without any adhesives and with each piece fitting into each other through tongue and groove joints. Now you have to get down to the job of removing all traces of the adhesive or sealant and cleaning up the floor completely for the new flooring material.
Any DIY removing laminate flooring project requires you to perform other tasks as well.Laminated flooring of the floating kind is quite often laid on an underlay. Adhesive can be removed with a razor floor scraper if the floor is of concrete and a wedge scraper if it is of wood. And I’ll give a quick disclaimer right now: painting your floors can look AWESOME and is a great solution for a cheap face lift until you can replace flooring outright.
The entry floor was covered with the same peel-n-stick vinyl tiles that we have in the kitchen. The original linoleum was a dark, heavy 70’s brown, so the white vinyl was a big improvement. But just like the kitchen floor, these tiles were 10 years old and seriously showing their wear. When we moved into our 1980’s house 9 years ago, the vinyl floors were hideous and in terrible shape. The main reason is that the floor planks are thicker than the rail of the T-Molding.
The project cost $80 and it took me 11 days to complete the kitchen, laundry room, entry and bathroom. I found a paint that worked on floors and on vinyl siding so I thought it would be a good choice for vinyl floors. When the homeowner saw my painted floors, he gasped because he thought I was going to hand him a bill for new vinyl. One of the finishing touches to installing laminate wood flooring is the molding and transitions. The tracks are normally screwed to the wood but in surfaces like concrete, the track can be glued to subfloor.
